When Anxiety Isn’t Just Anxiety: Understanding Hormonal Changes and the Importance of Self-Care
When Anxiety Isn’t Just Anxiety: Understanding Hormonal Changes and the Importance of Self-Care Many women walk into my treatment room and quietly admit the same thing. “I don’t feel like myself.” They describe feeling overwhelmed by things that never used to bother them. Their confidence has taken a knock. They feel anxious, irritable, exhausted or emotionally drained, yet they can’t always explain why. Often, they assume they’re simply stressed or that they’re not coping as well as they should be. But for many women, there is something else happening beneath the surface. As we move through our 40s and beyond, our hormones begin to change. For some women these changes are subtle, while for others they can feel life-changing. Fluctuating hormone levels can affect sleep, mood, concentration, confidence and emotional wellbeing. Anxiety can become more noticeable, even in women who have never experienced it before. Suddenly you may find yourself worrying more. Feeling less resilient. Overthinking situations. Struggling with brain fog. Feeling emotional for no obvious reason. Or simply feeling unlike the woman you’ve always known yourself to be. The Invisible Load Women Carry At the same time as our hormones are changing, many women are carrying an enormous mental and emotional load. We’re supporting children, teenagers or young adults. Caring for ageing parents. Managing careers and businesses. Navigating relationship changes. Supporting friends. Holding households together. Often putting everyone else’s needs before our own. It’s no wonder so many women reach a point where they feel exhausted, overwhelmed and disconnected from themselves. Self-Care Isn’t Selfish One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is that self-care is a luxury. That it’s something we earn once everything else is done. The reality is that self-care is often one of the first things we abandon when life becomes busy, yet it’s usually the thing we need most. Self-care doesn’t have to mean expensive holidays, spa weekends or hours of free time. Sometimes it looks like: Taking an uninterrupted walk. Saying no without guilt. Going to bed earlier. Taking five minutes to breathe. Booking a treatment and allowing yourself to switch off. Asking for help when you need it. Self-care is about recognising that your wellbeing matters too. Giving Your Nervous System a Chance to Rest Many women spend so much time in “go mode” that they forget what it feels like to truly relax. Our bodies are not designed to live in a constant state of stress. Massage, facial treatments and intentional relaxation won’t solve every problem, but they can provide something incredibly valuable: space. Space to breathe. Space to slow down. Space to reconnect with yourself. Space for your nervous system to settle. For many women, that hour on the treatment bed is one of the only times all week when nobody needs anything from them. And that’s important. You Are Not Alone If you’ve found yourself feeling more anxious, emotional, overwhelmed or simply different as you’ve moved through midlife, please know that you’re not alone. Many women are experiencing similar challenges, often quietly and without talking about them. There is no prize for struggling through it all on your own. Whether that support comes from friends, family, healthcare professionals, therapy, movement, massage, rest or simply having a safe space where you feel understood, you deserve it. This stage of life isn’t about becoming less of yourself. It’s about learning how to care for yourself differently. And perhaps, for the first time in a very long time, putting yourself somewhere near the top of your own list. bOOK NOW
